Netflix's Latest Swing at Adult Animation with Disenchantment

I don't laugh out loud at movies, television shows, YouTube videos, or text messages. It just goes against all of my instinct. It has nothing to do with the quality of the content itself- I find Modern Family funny, just like everyone else- but I would never burst out laughing during an episode. I have no idea why- no explanation to offer- I'm just saying it doesn't feel natural. (That being said, there are a select few tv shows, movies, and online creators that have turned me into a dirty liar and caused me to break this golden rule. That's a blog post for another day though...)

Now, I wanted to begin with that explanation before I share my thoughts on the Netflix animation Disenchantment. No, it's not because this show was one of the special ones. I wasn't in my room, alone, cackling like a witch over this Netflix Original. And I don't think you will either. I mean, maybe...it could have that effect on you. If you're one of those psychopaths that laughs at Saved By The Bell reruns then sure, this show will probably make you wet yourself. As for the average person, I don't see this being the absolute funniest series you will ever watch online. That's not necessarily a death sentence though. It won't be anyone's favorite, but Disenchantment is still a good addition to your lineup. I'd be shocked if anyone labeled this show as 'time wasted' because there is a smart, classically built foundation to this show.
The character work is what draws you in, no doubt about it. Cartoonist Matt Groening may just have the most recognizable hand in the business with his buck tooth clan of characters, who all live in The Simpson's universe as far as we're concerned.  Although, Disenchantment certainly takes place in a land far, far away from Springfield. The mystical fairytale kingdom known as Dreamland is home to our new motley crew of anti-heroes.
It's mature, with some language and explicit themes, but nothing blocking from young ears. The humor in this show would fly straight over their heads anyway. It's the crude, suggested topics that made it an adult-cartoon but rarely do they ever just come out and say it. Instead, you'll be introduced to innuendos and double meanings that make you feel like you're the dirty one for making the connection.
From Groening's past, there's a history of dark humor especially in his old comic strip "Life in Hell" (1998) which requires no further explanation.
